Find out how AI is used to generate conversation topics in real-time across the inbox

📢 As of July 2026, Smart Conversation Topics is still being developed and is expected to start piloting soon. If you would like to pilot Smart Conversation Topics, please sign up here.

What are Smart Conversation Topics?

Smart Conversation Topics give every conversation in your inbox a clear summary - so you can scan the inbox to find relevant messages and prioritise requests faster.

How topics work across your inbox

Every conversation in your inbox has a topic - a short summary that tells you what the message is about before you open it. How a topic is created depends on the type of message:

Conversation type

How the topic is generated

Patient Triage request (inbound)

AI-generated summary

Template, questionnaire, or booking link sent to patient

Name of the template, questionnaire, or booking link

Outbound message with an attachment

Name of the attachment

Free-text outbound message (no attachment)

User adds a topic manually via an ‘Add a topic’ prompt

Inbound email

Sender’s email subject line

For Patient Triage requests, the topic is generated automatically by AI as soon as the request arrives. For all other message types, the topic is drawn from existing structured information (such as a template name), or users are prompted to add one.

Where to find Topics in your Inbox

  • A short summary line appears just below the patient’s name in the conversation list.

Note: If you have narrowed your inbox width, some Smart Conversation Topics may appear cut off. Widen your inbox to see the full topic.

  • A small sparkle icon (✨) sits next to the summary. Clicking it opens a pop-up explaining that the summary was generated by AI.

Editing a topic

Any member of your workspace can edit a topic.

To edit:

1. Find the conversation in your inbox.

2. Click the pencil icon next to the topic.

3. Type your updated topic in the text field that appears (up to 120 characters).

4. Click the tick ✓ to save, or the ✕ to cancel.

Editing a topic only changes the label in your inbox - it does not affect the original patient submission or any clinical record.

How the AI works

When a patient submits a triage request, the AI reads the request and creates a one-line summary. It captures:

  • The main symptom and how long the patient has had it

  • How the symptoms are changing (if the patient mentions this)

  • Any relevant medications or conditions mentioned by the patient

  • What the patient is specifically asking for (e.g., “requesting blood tests” or “medication review”)

The AI should not diagnose or suggest what should happen next - it only summarises what the patient has already written.

Providing feedback on topics

In the inbox, you can use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icon for each set of topics to let Accurx know whether it was helpful. You can also use the Report an issue link if you spot a clinical safety concern. This feedback helps improve the feature over time.

Things to keep in mind

Topics is not a diagnostic tool

Smart Conversation Topics should not suggest a diagnosis or provide a management plan. The AI purely summarises what the patient has written. Clinicians should always open the full conversation and read the complete submission before making any clinical decision.

Very short requests

If a patient provides a very brief description, the AI will still generate a summary, but it may simply mirror the patient’s own words if there is not enough context to condense further.

Frequently asked questions

Will every triage request get a summary?

Yes, a Conversation Topic is generated for every medical Patient Triage request that comes into the inbox.

What if the summary is wrong?

The summary is a helpful starting point, not a replacement for reading the full request. Clinicians should always open the conversation to review the full details before acting. If you spot an inaccuracy, use the thumbs-down icon to flag it. You can also use the Report an issue link if you spot a clinical safety concern.

Does the patient know their request is being summarised?

Patients are not shown the summary; it is only visible to the practice. The use of AI is disclosed in the Accurx Patient Terms of Use.

Can I edit a topic?

Yes. Any workspace member can edit a topic by clicking the pencil icon next to it in the conversation list. Type the updated topic (up to 120 characters) and click the tick to save. Editing a topic does not affect the original patient submission.

Could a summary cause a clinician to miss something important?

The summary is intended to help you triage more effectively, not to replace reading requests. The full patient submission is always one click away, and clinical decisions should always be based on the complete text.

Does the AI Conversation Topic replace the note function in the inbox?

No. The note function remains available and works as before. Smart Conversation Topics are a separate label shown in the conversation list and do not affect notes.

Will Smart Conversation Topics change inbox ordering or help prioritise requests?

Not in this release. The inbox ordering is unchanged. Accurx is actively exploring ways to help practices prioritise triage requests more effectively, and we’ll share more as this develops.

Is patient data used to train the AI?

No. Patient data submitted through Accurx is not used to train the underlying AI model.

Are GPs liable if the AI gets something wrong?

As with any clinical software, GPs remain responsible for their decisions. Our AI features are designed to support clinical decision-making, not replace it. There is always a clinician in the loop. Accurx builds in safeguards and holds itself to accuracy standards, but no AI is perfect.
